Description
SSK currently has the following career opportunity in its Information Systems department in Swellendam. The position offers a Hybrid work model, subject to the department's needs. The Data Engineer will help build and improve SSK’s modern data platform. This role will focus on developing reliable, scalable data pipelines and models in Snowflake to support reporting, analytics, and future AI use cases across the business. The successful candidate will work with data from systems such as SAP HANA, SQL Server, and other operational platforms to help create a well-structured, trusted data environment for SSK.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain data pipelines into Snowflake from various source systems.
  • Develop and improve data models that support reporting, analytics, and business decision-making.
  • Ensure data is accurate, well-structured, and fit for use across the business.
  • Monitor and optimize data pipeline performance, reliability, and cost.
  • Apply good practices for data security, access control, and governance.
  • Work with business and technical teams to understand data and deliver practical solutions.
  • Support the ongoing development of SSK’s cloud data platform and standards.
  • Document solutions and contribute to a maintainable, scalable data environment.
Requirements
  • Degree, diploma, or relevant practical experience in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
  • Around 3+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a similar role.
  • Experience working with production data pipelines and structured data platforms.
  • Exposure to tools such as dbt, Git, SAP HANA, SQL Server, or Qlik will be an advantage.
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong SQL skills and practical experience working with cloud data warehouse solutions.
  • Experience building ELT/ETL pipelines in a cloud or modern data environment.
  • Good understanding of data modeling for analytics and reporting.
  • Familiarity with Python or another scripting language used in data engineering.
  • Understanding data quality, access control, and good governance practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues and improve performance where needed.
  • Good communication skills and a practical, problem-solving mindset.
